Used Gauge Buyers Guide
2000-2003 Gauges - Can be switched between 2000-03 bikes. Wiring harness is different than any of the newer years. I’m sorry I do not work on gauges of these years. Why? Because electronics have a life span, and I made a choice of a 15 year cut off point, with there being no way of telling a 03 gauge from a 2000 gauge I have decided it is best for me not to mod any of them. Harley no longer makes replacement gauges for these years. Your options are Dakota Digital, Medallion or used gauges off ebay for replacements.
2004-2006 Gauges, have a distinctive female connector on the back of the gauge that the wiring harness plugs into. One is gray (tach) and the other is black (speedo). These gauges are dimmer than the newer gauges (07-up) and are for bikes with 5 gal gas tanks. The needle lights the rest of the gauge and they look best modded in one color config.
2007 Gauges are a year all by themselves, they appear the same as the 2008-13 gauges the female connector is part of the gauge housing (white). These gauges can have the 3 separate color configs (gauge/needle/mileage) and for bikes with 5 gal gas tanks. They can be used in 2004 to 2007 touring bikes.
2008-2013 Gauges are all interchangeable, these gauges can have the 3 separate color configs (gauge/needle/mileage) and for bikes with 6 gal gas tanks. If you try and use these gauges in a earlier year bike it will give a wrong fuel gauge reading as the speedo/ fuel gauge and sending unit out of the gas tank all have to work together. 2008 was the introduction of ABS breaks, the tach marries the bike that the gauge was originally equipped on being ABS or Non ABS. A ABS tach will illuminate the ABS light all the time when equipped on a Non ABS bike.
2014-Present Gauges Run on the Can-Bus data system and the Speedo/Tach can not be sold or reused on any other bike than they came on. They will read V Inner in the LCD and it can not be cleared by the dealer.
